A number of children with an ADHD Diagnosis don’t grow out of the condition as they mature. Around 50% of them will still have the condition when they reach adulthood. As the kids grow older, the problems caused by their hyperactivity, inability to pay attention, and impulsiveness can become issues of poor self esteem, substance abuse, and even hurt their ability to get and hold down jobs. It is for this reason that some form of ADHD treatment should be implemented as soon as the condition is diagnosed.
There are a number of different ways to treat ADHD, and each one works differently with different people.In some cases, they might not work at all. Some therapy doesn’t use medication, but depends entirely upon behavioral modification therapy. Studies have shown that, when tailored to the needs of the individual child, their condition can be improved safely and effectively, using medications that stimulate the brain, behavioral therapy, and sometimes other drugs. By eliminated sugar, food coloring and preservatives from the child’s food has also proven to be quite effective. Many children who have gone through these treatments find themselves to be much improved in their ability to pay attention and follow the rules in school. Both an improvement in personal relationships with both friends and family.
It is important for the parents, child, teachers, and school counselors to all be educated fully about both the actual diagnosis and the prescribed treatments that are going to be followed. Managing their behavior and administering medication will at times also become the responsibility of the school. Part of effectively managing behavior requires a flow of communication in both directions continuously.
What medications will be recommended by your doctors? Treatment may include stimulants like Ritalin, Concerta, and Metadate. Amphetamines like Adderall, Dexedrine, Dextrostat, or Vyvanse (a newer drug) may be recommended. Vyvanse is considered to cause less dependence than the older stimulants.
When there’s a problem with some of the stimulants used, Wellbutrin, an antidepressant is used. In order to reduce stimulant side effects like involuntary tics and movements and insomnia are sometimes treated with antidepressants. It is better tolerated with fewer side effects than some of the tricyclic antidepressants like Pamelor, Norpramin, Aventyl, or Tofranil. Also effective when treating ADHD is Strattera and Intuniv which are nonstimulants.
Receiving an ADHD Diagnosis isn’t the worst thing you can hear. With the correct treatment, medication and behavioral therapy, they can grow up to lead healthy, productive lives.
