Small Fixes Done on Wooden Jewelry Boxes
Sunday, November 20th, 2011Most of you would love to keep and preserve your jewelry boxes even if they seem to be damaged. They are a joy to own especially if they’ve been with the family for generations. Wooden jewelry boxes require extra care if you wish to maintain how they look.
If the box is chipped when it accidentally fell or it looks quite old with moldy wood then you would need a reaper and fix the box with tacks. Always use tacks of the right size or else the opposite side will just look quite uneven. Choose tacks with threaded ends so they will stay in place and are more durable.
Make sure to set the reaper exactly on the chipped portion and drive the tacks according to the gaps. After tacking the area, make sure there are no chipped portions in the interiors; you can use a metal paste known as a universal surface filler. Put in on the chipped portions and evenly spread the paste on all sides of the area. This paste has three excellent qualities.
It has a quick drying formula, anti-corrosive, and easy to apply. It’s cream-colored and needs to be applied and allowed to dry. For a smoother finish, apply a nice coat of varnish after the cream dries.
If your jewelry box has a cracked mirror, you need to remove every piece of glass carefully. For your safety, take the box out of the house, spread a sheet of newspaper and shake the box to remove small pieces of broken glass. If they’re difficult to remove, you can use a blunt knife to lift off the broken shards. Dispose the broken glass properly.
Next, you need to sand the side of the box where the mirror is to be attached. This provides the mirror a strong grip when it gets stuck and prevents it from sliding out of place. Take the correct measurements so you can have the mirror cut in the right size in your local hardware store.
Get a glue used specifically for glass and spread it evenly at the back of the mirror. Properly position the mirror and stick it inside the jewelry box. Allow the glue to dry and in a few minutes you’ll have a perfectly restored jewelry box. When repairing a torn lining in a corner of the box, you can use a special adhesive.
You can repair it yourself if the damage is minimal. But if it’s torn and damaged, you need to replace the lining. Follow these simple steps to replace the lining of your jewelry box. Carefully measure the area where you will place the lining and cut the cloth accordingly. Spread ample amount of glue in the interiors and carefully place the linings and make folds in the corners for a clean finish.
Press the cloth and tug a bit on one side for a neat finish. When you’re repairing a broken latch, it’s advisable to buy a new one and have it replaced. You can choose from a variety of latches. A simple lock gives an exotic look especially one with silver or gold coating. Using a few screws and a screwdriver you’ll be able to attach the latch but use very light pressure as it may break the wood.
Fixing your jewelry box by yourself is quite easy if you know how to do it the proper way. With these simple tips and instructions you’ll be able to restore the original charm of your jewelry box.
