Nearing middle age gave me a reason to take stock of where I was at. I had a good family with my wife and kids. We had managed to get a nice home. My job was fairly secure and we were financially stable. It appeared that my life was going the way that it should and I had most of what I needed.

I was content, but I knew I could do something better. I felt like I could lose some weight. My waistline seemed to be growing every year. It was not something I wanted. But as I looked around I noticed something. It would not hurt my children or my spouse to look in the mirror either. None of us had a big problem with our weight. The problem was that none of us were exactly skinny either. I think that I set a bad example that was being followed by the others and decided to do something about it, but I knew that it was not a case of me deciding on a way how to lose weight fast at home in a week, but rather a time for my whole family to start making better choices about how we were treating our bodies and decide on how we could improve the choices. As the head o the household it was up to me to get my family to make the right choices about how to treat their body.

Deciding that it was time to get healthy as a family was not difficult. But the hard part was what followed making the decision to get healthy. Getting my wife and children to agree that we should all do this was the first thing I had to do. Getting a family to agree on how they would accomplish the goals was a difficult task as well. We all knew that too much fast food was not healthy and changing this would go a long way in improving our diet and although cutting it out would not help us learn how to lose weight fast it would help us start to lose some weight if we were able to combine it with other changes in our lifestyle, and we had to figure out why we had become dependent on things like fast food and snacking to keep us full.

It would not be simple to fit some things into our lives, but it could be done if we tried. The first thing was to eat together more often. This would eliminate some of our fast food habits. Cooking meals at home allowed us to choose healthier foods to eat. Sitting down for a family meal allowed us to talk more and to discuss things that were important to us with the people we cared about the most. As we got healthier, we learned more about each other. Since we were in this together, we also decided to eliminate the tempting foods that were lying around our home. Instead we would stock the house with more fruit and vegetables. Not having the unhealthy food around would reduce the temptation.
The other thing we decided to do was to walk as a family at least every other night. The length of the walk was not what was important. Doing it as a family is what made it work. We found a lot of support by doing it together.

For the past year we have done things this way. Our health has improved somewhat. The amazing part is that we get along even better than before. I had no idea when this started that that would happen. I could not be happier that it did.

Kids don’t seem to think that they will ever get older and the way they do things reflects that and I was just like any other kid. I ate what I wanted, when I wanted. All of my time was spent on work, whether it be mine or my kids homework. This was not a good way to survive and I had to do something different. If I didn’t get some control in my life, I would be teaching my kids the wrong way to live their life.~I was setting a bad example for my kids and knew that if I didn’t change they would turn out just like me. If finding an organization that sponsors outdoor activities is not possible, then get outside as a family. With spring approaching the weather is getting nicer and the whole family can go out to the park together. It can be any type of activity, such as throwing a football or baseball and the memories that are created for everyone can not be duplicated.

In addition to exercising, kids need to learn how to eat a nutritional diet. Kids should avoid the candy and the food that is not healthy for them. Kids should not skip any meals, they should just limit what they eat at each meal. Less amounts of several types of food can be provided to the children so that their bodies are given everything that they need. Kids should not learn that their dinner comes from a drive thru window.

Kids don’t need to diet to stay at a healthy weight, and they don’t need to learn how to lose weight fast, but they do need to learn that exercise and a proper diet is an important part of their life, just like taking a bath and brushing their teeth is important and it is something that must be a part of their life every day. If our kids can find out about the importance of diet and exercise when they are young, they can take those lessons into their adult life. This job falls upon the adults in a child’s life to give them these lessons.
